Explicit Realizations of Solvable Groups: Unlocking the Inverse Galois Problem
Abstract
The Inverse Galois Problem (IGP) stands as one of the most profound and challenging open questions in contemporary algebra and number theory, asking whether every finite group can be realized as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rational numbers $mathbb{Q}$. While the problem remains open in its general form, significant progress has been made for specific classes of groups. Solvable groups, by virtue of their hierarchical structure composed of abelian quotients, represent a crucial class for which an affirmative answer was famously provided by Shafarevich. However, Shafarevich's theorem is non-constructive, meaning it guarantees existence without providing explicit polynomials or field extensions. This paper delves into the explicit realization of solvable groups as Galois groups over number fields, primarily $mathbb{Q}$. We explore classical and modern constructive techniques, including Kummer theory for abelian extensions, Artin-Schreier theory for extensions in positive characteristic, the method of embedding problems for building up group structures, and the application of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem. The objective is to provide concrete methodologies and illustrative examples for constructing polynomials whose splitting fields yield prescribed solvable Galois groups, thereby offering tangible steps towards unlocking the constructive aspects of the Inverse Galois Problem for this fundamental class of groups.
