SYNAPSE: A Stigmergic Protocol for Cognitive Interoperability in Multi-Agent
Abstract
The rapid deployment of Large Language Model (LLM) agents has revealed a fundamental limitation in current interoperability standards: the inability to transmit latent belief states alongside semantic payloads. Existing protocols (JSON-RPC, HTTP) facilitate syntactic data exchange but fail to convey *cognitive state*—specifically Intent, Context, and Confidence. This omission results in **Context-Blind Agents**: systems with high reasoning capabilities (e.g., GSM8K > 80%) but zero situational awareness, prone to propagated errors we term **Hallucination Cascades**. We introduce the **Cognitive AI Interconnection Protocol (CAIP)**, a 9-layer reference model that formalizes the exchange of knowledge between heterogeneous agents. Implementing CAIP, we propose **SYNAPSE (RFC-001)** [1], a stigmergic protocol that wraps communications in a formalized **Cognitive Envelope ($C_E$)**. By embedding "Theory of Mind" into the transport layer, SYNAPSE enables agents to validate the safety and relevance of instructions before execution. Simulation results demonstrate a 100% reduction in catastrophic errors in high-stakes environments, with a marginal latency overhead of 40ms.
