The Historical Development and AI-Era Significance of Technorhetoric: From Version 1.0 (2007) to Version 2.0 (2018)
Abstract
This document provides a historical and conceptual overview of Technorhetoric Version 1.0 (2007) and Version 2.0 (2018), tracing their development from the original 2004 formulation of the “55th rule,” which first introduced the Ten Rhetorical Principles (10のレトリック®)(Kataoka 2007/2009). While the 2004 book presented these principles only as the final rule within a broader set of technical‑writing guidelines, the formal system and title featuring the Ten Rhetorical Principles emerged in 2007 as Technorhetoric Version 1.0. Technorhetoric Version 2.0 expanded the framework by integrating structural and explanatory models that anticipated the communicative demands of the emerging AI era. The 2018 book associated with Version 2.0 opened with an author‑written introductory statement—“AI(人工知能)時代に生き残る!” (“Survive in the age of AI!”)—which appeared verbatim at the top of the Amazon Japan product page. This was not created by Amazon but was the author’s original wording. In retrospect, this phrasing captured the forward‑looking spirit of Version 2.0 and remarkably foreshadowed the challenges that would later define AI‑era technical communication. Version 2.0 also articulated universal explanatory principles—“one word = one meaning® (Kataoka 2007/2009),” “one sentence = one idea® (Kataoka 2007/2009),” and “one paragraph = one topic® (Kataoka 2007/2009),” all of which were trademarked in 2009.These principles remain fully applicable today for human writers, AI systems, and collaborative human‑AI communication, demonstrating the enduring relevance and adaptability of the Version 2.0 framework in the contemporary landscape. This document serves as the definitive archival reference for Technorhetoric up to Version 2.0.It also provides the conceptual foundation for the forthcoming Version 3.0, which introduces a new philosophical and structural basis for cross‑intelligence communication in the age of artificial intelligence and emerging superintelligence. This paper provides the historical foundation of Technorhetoric from Version 1.0 (2007) to Version 2.0 (2018), clarifying how its bidirectional writing architecture emerged. As AI‑mediated communication became structurally dominant, these early versions established the reproducibility principles that later enabled Version 3.0. The document now functions as a core historical reference for understanding the evolution of high‑precision, ambiguity‑controlled writing systems in the AI era.
