Derivation and Nominalization in Medical Terminology: A Comparative Model of Term and Process Name Formation in English and Uzbek
Abstract
Derivation and nominalization play a central role in the formation of medical terminology, enabling the systematicnaming of processes, conditions, and clinical procedures. The present study aims to develop a comparative modelof derivational and nominalization mechanisms in English and Uzbek medical terminology. Drawing on data from internationalmedical classifications, specialized dictionaries, and academic corpora, the study analyzes structural patterns, functional differences, and semantic transparency in both languages. The findings demonstrate that English exhibits ahighly productive nominalization system based on Greek–Latin affixes, whereas Uzbek relies on a hybrid model combiningborrowed nominal forms with native verbal–nominal constructions. The study highlights typological factors shapingterm formation and proposes principles for terminological standardization in Uzbek medical discourse.
