NOSTRUM - Optimizing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines For Use In The Mediterranean Sea - TECHNICAL REPORTS - Part 2
Abstract
This dataset contains the two reports related to Milestones 3 and 5 of the project. The first report (M3_D2) concerns the selection and implementation of a baseline wind turbine model and the definition of the corresponding optimization and simulation set-up. It documents the reference configuration adopted for subsequent design activities, including the modelling assumptions, numerical tools, and simulation workflow used to evaluate aerodynamic performance and loads under representative operating conditions. This baseline constitutes the consistent starting point for blade and tower optimization under the met-ocean conditions, DLCs, and platform dynamics defined in the previous work packages. The second report (M5_D4) concerns the optimized airfoil design developed through a multi-fidelity numerical approach. Starting from the DTU FFA-W3 airfoil family used in the IEA 15 MW reference turbine, it defines a new set of geometries tuned to maximize aerodynamic efficiency within the ranges of Reynolds number, angle of attack, and thickness relevant to the target sites. The report combines fast, lower-cost methods for preliminary screening with high-fidelity CFD analyses (2D RANS/URANS, including transition modelling where needed) to build an aerodynamic database that supports automated blade design and subsequent rotor-level optimization, with additional targets such as increased torque at low wind speeds and controlled noise emission.
