EPOS-ES Open Access, FAIR data and Data Management in Geosciences - Session 2
Abstract
Session 2 of the EPOS-ES seminar on Open Access, FAIR data and Data Management in Geosciences. This presentation provides an overview of licensing frameworks in the context of Open Science, with particular attention to European data governance policies and FAIR data sharing requirements. It explains the legal foundations of copyright and intellectual property rights, clarifies how open licenses protect authors while enabling reuse, and outlines licensing strategies for different research outputs, including raw data, metadata, datasets, scientific products, and software. The material offers practical guidance on Creative Commons licenses (e.g., CC0, CC BY), open source software licenses, license compatibility, and derivative works, supporting researchers in selecting appropriate licenses that balance openness, legal compliance, and protection of authorship. Designed as a training resource, it aims to help researchers align their practices with Open Science principles and high-value dataset sharing requirements.
