EPOS-ES Open Access, FAIR data and Data Management in Geosciences - Session 4
Abstract
Session 4 of the EPOS-ES seminar on Open Access, FAIR data and Data Management in Geosciences. This presentation introduces the fundamentals of Data Management Plans (DMPs) for researchers and research support personnel in the geosciences. It explains the purpose, structure, and strategic importance of DMPs within Horizon Europe and other funding frameworks, emphasizing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles and community standards such as EPOS. The material provides step-by-step guidance on drafting a DMP, covering data description, metadata, storage and backup, sharing and licensing, interoperability, long-term preservation, resource allocation, data security, and ethical considerations. Through practical examples and case studies relevant to geoscience research (e.g., seismic networks, GNSS, InSAR, modelling outputs), the presentation supports researchers in developing realistic, compliant, and FAIR-by-design data management strategies.
