Bulgarian Medieval Icon Painting (9th–15th Centuries): Stylistic Evolution, Technological Innovations, and Canonical Stability
Abstract
This research paper explores the complex landscape of Bulgarian icon painting between the 9th and 15th centuries, focusing on the intersection of theological dogma and local artistic ingenuity. The author examines the transition from the unique ceramic traditions of the Preslav School to the refined, psychologically nuanced Palaeologan style of the Tarnovo School . By integrating archaeological data, chemical-physical analysis of pigments, and epigraphic evidence, the study highlights the role of the Bulgarian icon as a primary historical source for understanding the cultural and political maturity of the Medieval Bulgarian state within the Byzantine Commonwealth .
