Best Farmgate Price Percentage Per Global Cocoa Price (2016–2026)
Abstract
Abstract This study examines Ghana’s cocoa farmgate price as a percentage of the global cocoa price from 2016 to February 2026. The research highlights trends in producer pricing, global commodity volatility, and policy responses by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). Findings show that Ghana’s farmgate share fluctuated significantly, declining during the 2023–2024 global price surge and increasing toward parity in 2025–2026 following market corrections. 1. Introduction Cocoa remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to export earnings and rural livelihoods. The relationship between farmgate prices and global cocoa prices determines farmer income stability and competitiveness. This study evaluates how Ghana’s producer prices compare with international market prices over a ten-year period. 2. Methodology This research relies on secondary data from commodity market reports, international cocoa price indices, and Ghana Cocoa Board announcements. Global prices reflect international futures market averages, while farmgate prices are based on official seasonal announcements converted to US dollars for comparison. 3. Yearly Comparative Analysis (2016–2026) 2016–2019: Ghana’s farmgate prices averaged between 60–90% of global prices during relatively stable global markets. 2020–2022: Farmgate prices represented approximately 40–55% of global prices amid moderate international price levels and exchange rate pressures. 2023–2024: Global cocoa prices surged dramatically, exceeding $10,000–$12,000 per tonne at peak levels in early 2024. Ghana’s farmgate price (~$2,100–$3,060) represented only 30–50% of global prices during this period. 2025: Ghana significantly increased producer prices to approximately $4,600–$5,040 per tonne, narrowing the gap to 80–95% of global prices. February 2026: Global cocoa prices declined sharply to approximately $3,700–$4,100 per tonne due to reduced demand and stock accumulation in West Africa. COCOBOD revised the farmgate price to approximately $3,580 per tonne (41,392 cedis) for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. This placed Ghana’s farmgate price at approximately 87–98% of the global price, representing near parity. 4. Market Dynamics The 2023–2024 price boom was driven by adverse weather, disease outbreaks in West Africa, and speculative pressures in futures markets. By late 2025 and early 2026, improved supply expectations and weakened demand caused a substantial market correction. Cocoa prices are highly volatile and subject to rapid changes based on supply reports and global demand trends. 5. Policy Implications A higher farmgate percentage improves farmer welfare but may create fiscal strain if global prices decline. Ghana’s recent strategy of aligning producer prices more closely with export benchmarks reflects efforts to reduce smuggling, stabilize incomes, and maintain competitiveness. 6. Conclusion Between 2016 and 2026, Ghana’s cocoa farmgate price as a percentage of global prices shifted considerably. The lowest shares occurred during the 2023–2024 global price surge, while the highest shares were observed in 2025–2026 as global prices declined and Ghana adjusted policy. The findings underscore the importance of adaptive pricing mechanisms in managing commodity volatility and protecting farmer livelihoods.
