Data Gathering Simulation: A Role-Play Approach to Training Students in Survey Research Interviews
Abstract
This paper presents the Data Gathering Simulation, an original pedagogical strategy designed to prepare students for the complexities of survey research interviews. The approach uses randomized role-play scenarios to expose students to diverse respondent behaviors such as distracted, rushed, suspicious, or uncooperative respondents. Through guided simulation, feedback, and reflection, students develop adaptability, professionalism, and mastery of interview schedules before actual field deployment. The strategy was conceptualized and implemented by the author to address gaps between theoretical instruction and real-world data collection experiences. By providing a controlled yet realistic learning environment, the Data Gathering Simulation enhances students’ field readiness and interpersonal research skills.Proper attribution is required when citing, adapting, or implementing this approach.Recommended citation:Espinazo, J.
