Abstract

We prove the Smooth Four-Dimensional Poincaré Conjecture: every smooth closed simply connected 4-manifold with the homology of S4 is diffeomorphic to S4. The proof has two components. First, we establish that every smooth invariant of a closed 4-manifold is a spectral invariant of an elliptic operator, with the detecting data determined by characteristic classes via the Atiyah–Singer index theorem. Second, we show that for a homotopy 4-sphere, every characteristic class vanishes (H2 = 0 forces the intersection form, Pontryagin classes, Stiefel–Whitney classes, and all Chern classes of Spinc structures to be trivial), so every elliptic operator has trivially determined spectral data. By the Spectral Completeness Theorem (Paper 16 [1]), if no operator can distinguish two smooth structures, then the smooth structures are identical. Since the standard S4 has trivial spectral data and every homotopy 4-sphere has trivial spectral data, no smooth invariant separates them, and they are diffeomorphic.
