STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING ERECTION-STAGE CLASHES IN BIM-BASED DESIGN OF STEEL FRAMES
Abstract
The paper examines strategies for preventing erection-stage clashes during BIM-based design of steel frames, focusing on fabrication-level detailing (KMD) and cross-discipline coordination. Clashes are interpreted as a predictable outcome of geometric uncertainty, fragmented authoring, and weak issue governance. Novelty lies in an integrated prevention scheme that links scan-informed existing-condition modeling, coordinate control for federated discipline models, rule-based clash screening with prioritization, and traceable issue exchange through collaboration formats. The paper sets the goal of formulating a practical set of prevention tactics that reduce rework during fabrication and site assembly without relying on new experiments. Analytical synthesis covers recent studies on clash detection, OpenBIM collaboration, MEP coordination management, steel-frame BIM-to-fabrication workflows, scan-to-BIM reconstruction for steel profiles, and AI-supported conflict resolution. The concluding part formulates recommendations for accuracy targets in KMD models, federation rules, and feedback loops between designers, fabricators, and erectors. The text is specifically designed to serve BIM coordinators, steel detailers, and project managers.
