Abstract

Geometric flows, such as the Ricci flow and mean curvature flow, are powerful tools in differential geometry for deforming Riemannian manifolds and submanifolds, often leading to deep insights into their topology and structure. However, a central challenge in the theory of geometric flows is the formation of singularities, where the geometric quantities like curvature or metric tensors become unbounded, causing the flow to terminate or require intricate surgical procedures. Understanding the nature and classification of these singularities is paramount for harnessing the full potential of geometric flow methods. This paper proposes a novel approach to characterize geometric flow singularities through their homotopy-theoretic signatures. We posit that as a manifold or geometric structure evolves towards a singular state, the intrinsic topological and algebraic invariants, particularly those arising from homotopy theory (e.g., homotopy groups, characteristic classes, $K$-theory), undergo specific, quantifiable changes that serve as premonitory signals or post-singularity descriptors. Drawing inspiration from recent advances in the theory of flows of geometric $H$-structures and thermodynamic characterizations of singular Bayesian models, we develop a theoretical framework to identify how the evolution of these structures, their intrinsic torsion, and energy functionals correlate with abrupt shifts in the homotopy type of the manifold or related bundle constructions. We hypothesize that phenomena such as the collapse of homotopy groups, the emergence of non-trivial characteristic classes, or changes in the fundamental group can precisely categorize different types of singularities, offering a more robust and intrinsically topological classification. This approach aims to bridge the gap between local analytical descriptions of singularities and global topological invariants, providing new diagnostic tools and a deeper understanding of the interplay between geometry and topology at the boundary of existence for geometric flows.
