Cohomological Induction and Unitary Duals for Real Reductive Lie Groups of Exceptional Type
Abstract
The classification of the unitary dual G"0362Gu of a real reductive Lie group G remains one of the central open problems in harmonic analysis and representation theory. While the unitary duals of classical groups have been largely described, exceptional groups of type G2, F4, E6, E7, and E8 present significant combinatorial and algebraic challenges. This monograph explores the construction of unitary representations via cohomological induction, specifically focusing on the Vogan-Zuckerman Aq() modules. We analyze the preservation of unitarity under the Zuckerman functors and the role of the "good range" conditions. Furthermore, we discuss the recent computational advances driven by the Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations project, particularly regarding the determination of the unitary dual for the split real form of E8 through the computation of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials and the signature of invariant Hermitian forms. We provide a rigorous synthesis of the algebraic framework required to isolate the unitary spectrum within the admissible dual.
