STL files of segmented FDM-printable rotor blades for Small Wind Turbines
Abstract
This dataset contains STL files for FDM-printable rotor blade segments designed for DIY small wind turbines (SWT), specifically for a 2 m diameter Piggott-type turbine. The geometry, based on an SD7037 airfoil, was aerodynamically optimized for very low Reynolds numbers in a range of 50.000-65.000. The blade is divided into modular segments that can be printed individually using commonly available desktop FDM 3D printers. Assembly requires only one M4 threaded rod and two M4 locking nuts - one placed inside the hub segments, inserted by pausing the print, and one after segment 7, which is then covered by the segment 8, the cap. While not required, epoxy resin can be applied to the connector surfaces to increase stiffness. These STL files were created as part of a master’s thesis at BOKU University. The goal of the work was to assess the potential of additive manufacturing for decentralized (DIY) production of rotor blades for small wind turbines. The files are intended for research, educational and DIY renewable energy applications. The design process focuses on reproducibility and accessibility, with the blades being scalable to different rotor sizes with only minor geometric adjustments.
