Abstract

INTRODUCTION: We employed the Translational Science Benefits Module (TSBM) and ripple-effect mapping to evaluate the bibliometric, career, and societal impacts of Dr. Fu's KL2-supported research. Our objective is to identify the pathways through which KL2 support contributes to sustained translational influence. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods approach, we integrated KL2 TSBM survey data, advanced bibliometric analyses, and qualitative insights from Dr. Fu's impact story. Bibliometric data were derived from iCite and Dimensions. Technology translation was quantified via patent filings and licensing metrics. Societal and policy uptake were measured using Altmetric Attention Scores and Overton policy citation data. Career progression from KL2 through faculty advancement was contextualized using bibliometric evidence of academic output and career promotion. Ripple-effect mapping synthesized these data sources to reveal how early outputs interact, compound, and propagate along the translational continuum. RESULTS: Across data sources, strong amplification of impact was observed in core TSBM domains. Dr. Fu's KL2-supported work advanced device innovation, expanded interdisciplinary and team-science collaborations, and generated publications with research influence. Media engagement and emerging policy citations broadened societal reach, while early patenting and licensing activity indicated translational momentum. Ripple-effect mapping demonstrated that initial outputs sparked new partnerships, clinical applications, and leadership roles, forming an interconnected, expanding impact network consistent with CTSA workforce and innovation priorities. DISCUSSION: This case demonstrates how TSBM and ripple-effect mapping make visible the layered, evolving nature of translational impact. Dr. Fu's trajectory illustrates how KL2 support can initiate career, scientific, clinical, and societal contributions that grow in scale, influence, and complexity over time.
