Abstract

## Abstract We demonstrate that the six quark masses of the Standard Model can be derived from the discrete root angle spectrum of the exceptional Lie algebra E₈, achieving an average error of 5.5% with **zero fitted Yukawa coupling parameters**. Each quark corresponds to a specific projection channel of the 240 E₈ roots onto the Weyl vector **ρ**, with channel indices matching known algebraic invariants: Casimir operator degrees and maximal subgroup representation dimensions. The mass formula $m_q(k) = V_{\text{Higgs}} \cdot \sqrt{2} \cdot \epsilon^{k \cdot 28/30}$ contains only one free parameter—the fundamental scale $\Lambda_{E8} = 51.9$ GeV—previously fixed by the neutron lifetime anomaly. Five of six quarks achieve precision below 10%, with the down quark matching experimental values to **0.05%**. This quantization structure suggests that flavor physics is not a collection of arbitrary parameters but emerges from the representation theory of a unified gauge group. Keywords: E₈ Lie algebra, quark masses, Yukawa couplings, grand unification, heterotic string theory, root systems --- ## 1. Introduction ### 1.1 The Standard Model Yukawa Problem The Standard Model of particle physics successfully describes electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions but requires 19 free parameters in its Yukawa sector to match experimental fermion masses. The six quark masses span five orders of magnitude: $$m_t \approx 173 \text{ GeV}, \quad m_b \approx 4.2 \text{ GeV}, \quad m_c \approx 1.3 \text{ GeV}$$$$m_s \approx 96 \text{ MeV}, \quad m_d \approx 4.7 \text{ MeV}, \quad m_u \approx 2.2 \text{ MeV}$$ This hierarchy remains unexplained: why these particular values? Why this pattern? The Yukawa couplings $y_q$ in the Standard Model Lagrangian: $$\mathcal{L}_{\text{Yukawa}} = -y_q \bar{Q}_L \tilde{H} u_R - y_d \bar{Q}_L H d_R + \text{h.c.}$$ are **free parameters** adjusted to match observations. No theoretical principle determines them. ### 1.2 Grand Unified Theories and E₈ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) attempt to embed the Standard Model gauge group $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ into a larger simple group. The exceptional Lie algebra **E₈** has emerged as a compelling candidate through: 1. **Heterotic String Theory**: The $E_8 \times E_8$ heterotic string provides a consistent quantum gravity framework with gauge group E₈2. **Anomaly Cancellation**: E₈ gauge theories naturally satisfy all Green-Schwarz anomaly conditions3. **Generation Structure**: The adjoint representation (248 dimensions) naturally decomposes into three generations under appropriate symmetry breaking ### 1.3 Geometrization of Yukawa Couplings Our central hypothesis: **quark masses are not arbitrary parameters but geometric quantities determined by the E₈ root lattice structure**. Specifically: - The 240 roots of E₈ project onto the Weyl vector **ρ** with **29 discrete angle channels**- Each quark occupies a specific channel determined by representation theory- Mass ratios emerge from exponential scaling of these discrete angles- The only free parameter is the overall scale $\Lambda_{E8}$, fixed independently This paper presents experimental validation of this geometric framework, achieving 5.5% average precision across all six quarks.
