Abstract

The Class Number Problem, a cornerstone of algebraic number theory, seeks to enumerate and characterize ideal class groups of number fields, quantifying the failure of unique factorization in their rings of integers. While extensively studied for quadratic fields, its generalization to arbitrary number fields presents significant challenges. This paper proposes a novel unit-driven approach to tackle the Class Number Problem, drawing inspiration from the central role of fundamental units in solving Pell's equation in real quadratic fields. We aim to generalize the conceptual framework of Pell's equation, traditionally $x^2 - Dy^2 = 1$, to higher degree number fields by examining the interplay between units, principal ideals, and the structure of the ideal class group. Our methodology involves developing computational techniques for approximating or determining generalized fundamental units in arbitrary number fields, utilizing these units to construct principal ideals, and then leveraging their properties to probe the equivalence classes of non-principal ideals. We discuss theoretical results on the regulator and its relationship to class numbers, exploring how the density of units impacts the class group structure. Furthermore, we outline algorithms for unit computation, including advanced lattice reduction techniques like LLL, and their application to generating elements within the ideal class group. This research demonstrates that a deeper understanding and effective computation of units can provide a powerful new lens through which to approach the long-standing Class Number Problem, offering pathways to both theoretical insights and practical algorithms for classifying ideal classes in complex number fields.
