Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Research Compass is a dynamic tool that helps UM faculty, clinical research professionals, community partners, and others navigate the complex research project lifecycle from initiation to dissemination by enabling timely access to critical research resources and streamlining the stages of research. METHODS: The Research Compass content was informed by interactions of researchers with the research navigator and through informal focus groups with faculty and clinical research professionals (CRPs). The content is updated monthly to include changes and additions to processes and policies and based on queries submitted to the research navigator. Initially built around the research lifecycle, the content is supported by quick reference guides customized for junior faculty, CRPs, and community partners. Key impact areas include engagement metrics, user feedback in areas such as enabling easy access to information, usability, satisfaction, and reducing operational barriers to conducting research. RESULTS: Launched as a web-based tool in April 2023, the Research Compass had 1,500 users and 13,600+ views through December 2025. There were 7,600+ views alone in 2025, ~30% more than 2024. User experience was positive, with 87% of users rating it as an excellent resource that has helped them navigate UM research processes effectively. 84% of users reported that the tool was easy to navigate, the information was comprehensive and well organized and helped answer their queries effectively. Recent enhancements included adding resources for community partners, grant boilerplate language for federal funding organizations, contract information, and grant section templates. DISCUSSION: Research Compass has reduced administrative and operational inefficiencies for teams conducting clinical and translational research. It offers an accessible overview of complex research processes and policies, training and regulatory requirements, and research resources.
