Abstract

Abstract We propose that space-time is not an abstract geometric manifold but a physical lattice composed of water molecules connected through asymmetric hydrogen bonding. The December 2024 discovery by Hunger et al. at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research confirmed that every liquid water molecule forms one strong and one weak hydrogen bond with its neighbors, an inherent molecular asymmetry that persists regardless of phase, temperature, or density. This asymmetric bonding rule produces a continuous lattice extending from planetary oceans through atmospheric vapor to interstellar molecular clouds, thinning in density but never breaking in geometric character. We demonstrate that the Schwarzschild metric of General Relativity emerges directly from the refractive index profile of this lattice under radial strain from a concentrated mass, recovering gravitational time dilation, light deflection, perihelion precession, Shapiro delay, and gravitational redshift without invoking an abstract curvature tensor. We extend the framework to rotating systems by introducing a lattice velocity field whose Fresnel drag reproduces the Kerr metric's frame-dragging terms, with the weak-field limit recovering the Lense-Thirring precession rate confirmed by Gravity Probe B. We identify the strong hydrogen bond as the molecular-scale expression of the strong nuclear force providing structural coherence, and the weak hydrogen bond as the molecular-scale expression of the weak nuclear force providing dynamic flexibility, unifying nuclear and gravitational phenomena as density-dependent manifestations of a single lattice mechanics. Quantum mechanical phenomena including wave-particle duality, entanglement, tunneling, and decoherence are reinterpreted as phonon propagation, continuous lattice connectivity, wave transmission through thin barriers, and dispersal into the broader lattice respectively. The framework generates five falsifiable predictions testable with existing instruments: anomalous light deflection at the level of two microarcseconds detectable by GRAVITY+, vibrational frequency shifts in water-rich clouds near Sagittarius A* measurable by JWST NIRSpec, gravitational wave echoes searchable in LIGO/Virgo archival data, strain-dependent interference fringe modulation in nano-fabricated ice membranes, and species-dependent fringe visibility differences between neutrons and electrons in comparative double-slit experiments. The hypothesis requires no additional fields, no extra dimensions, and no modification to Einstein's field equations. It identifies the physical substrate that General Relativity describes abstractly, replacing the question of what space-time does with the answer of what space-time is.
