Burundi's Education at a crossroads: A real story of Access, Retention, and the Struggle for Quality learning
Abstract
Burundi’s education system stands at a critical crossroads. Millions of children begin school each year with hope and ambition, yet for far too many, that hope fades long before graduation. This report explores the stark contrast between enrollment and completion, revealing that while over 90 percent of children start primary school, only a small fraction reach secondary education. Through detailed analysis of official data, reports from UNICEF, the World Bank, and other international agencies, this work highlights the challenges of retention, quality learning, and equitable access. It examines the obstacles children face, including poverty, weak infrastructure, limited teacher capacity, and social pressures, and critically evaluates past and ongoing interventions by the government, NGOs, and international partners. This report does more than present numbers, it tells the human story behind the statistics, emphasizing the real lives affected by educational inequities. It advocates for urgent, data-driven action, community engagement, and sustained investment to ensure that all children in Burundi can not only access school but thrive and complete their education.By publishing this report, the author aims to raise awareness among educators, policymakers, global organizations, and anyone committed to equitable education, providing a resource that informs action and inspires change.
