Abstract

This seminar explores the VIA character strength of teamwork as a foundational contributor to individual and collective flourishing in university contexts. Grounded in positive psychology and character strengths research, the session examines teamwork as the capacity to collaborate effectively toward shared goals while honoring individual strengths and responsibilities. Participants engage in reflective exercises, applied scenarios, and structured dialogue to explore the benefits, optimal expression, underuse, and overuse of teamwork. The seminar highlights how collaborative competence strengthens communication, problem-solving, belonging, leadership development, and long-term professional success. Through evidence-informed discussion and practical application, students are invited to cultivate balanced teamwork — contributing meaningfully to group efforts without losing autonomy, direction, or personal growth. The session positions teamwork not merely as a functional skill, but as a character strength that supports flourishing across academic, relational, and professional domains. Learning Outcomes By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: Define teamwork within the VIA Character Strengths framework and explain its role in flourishing. Identify the benefits of teamwork in academic, relational, and professional contexts. Differentiate between optimal use, underuse, and overuse of teamwork, recognizing potential risks of imbalance. Apply reflective strategies to strengthen collaborative capacity while maintaining personal responsibility and agency. Develop practical action steps (e.g., WOOP implementation intentions) to enhance teamwork in current academic or professional settings. Articulate how teamwork contributes to long-term career readiness, leadership development, and community belonging.
