Abstract

The Encyclopedia of Indian Food Ingredients is a foundational component of the Indian Food Informatics Data (IFID) project, conceived as Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for the Indian food ecosystem. This initiative provides a standardized taxonomy and multi-format dataset (JSON, Markdown, LaTeX) covering 600+ food components, spanning traditional Ayurvedic botanicals to modern industrial additives. By bridging traditional culinary knowledge systems with contemporary global food standards (such as Open Food Facts and INS/FSSAI classifications), the project establishes a machine-readable framework for food informatics in India. The work focuses on nomenclature normalization, hierarchical categorization, and interoperable data structuring to enable API integrations, research applications, and community-driven refinement over time.
