Introduction To English Language System
Abstract
This course package consists of nine chapters that guide the students in the Introduction to English Language System. It is an introductory course that provides the basic concepts of the core areas and sub-disciplines of Linguistics. This course package follows the sequence of discussions: Chapter 1 focuses on Introduction to the Study of Language, Chapter 2 on the Brief History of English, Chapter 3 on Phonology and Phonetics, Chapter 4 on Morphology, and Chapter 5 deals with Syntax. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss semantics and pragmatics. The last two chapters, namely Chapters 8 and 9, deal with Psycholinguistics and Writing an Article Critique. Each chapter follows the format such as preparation for the anticipatory set/motivation, presentation or input of the contents with the use of PowerPoint presentations or notes with various tools such as an audio recorder, screen recorder, links to access online learning materials, and the practice (also called exercises) for the formative teaching-learning assessment. Finally, the performance comprises graded written or oral presentations and collaborative discussion tasks. Hence, this course package follows the 4Ps: Preparation, Presentation, Practice, and Performance. To enhance communication, critical thinking, and academic writing skills, this course pack is based on the course outcomes of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies, such as: CLO1. Analyze the various data (newspaper, songs, brochures, billboards, prayers, video) from the theories and research findings in the English Language System (PO1, PO3) CLO2.
