The Astronomer's Serenade An Arts-Integrated Approach to Physics Concepts Arts-Integrated Pedagogy for Abstract Physics Concepts Through Classical Arabic Poetry
Abstract
The Astronomer’s Serenade is a pedagogical essay that explores how arts integrated learning can support conceptual understanding in physics, especially for learners who feel alienated by purely formal instruction. Written from the perspective of a special education practitioner, this work treats physics not only as a system of equations, but as a lived experience that can be approached through metaphor, story, and sound. The paper presents an original poem, Ya Najm Shamali, as the central artistic artefact, and then offers an interpretive analysis linking its imagery to ideas such as light travel time, spacetime, scale, and scientific wonder. Rather than arguing for a single “best method,” the essay documents a gentle, culturally responsive approach that may help some students stay engaged with physics long enough for understanding to take root. It is intended for educators, teacher educators, and interdisciplinary practitioners interested in STEAM, arts based inquiry, and inclusive entry points into difficult scientific concepts.
