Evolutionary Solutions to Recursive Self-Improvement
Abstract
The alignment problem for recursively self-improving AI systems is typically framed as an unsolved challenge requiring novel solutions. We demonstrate that evolution has already solved this problem: biological organisms are recursively self-improving systems that maintain stability via regulatory genes encoding homeostatic constraints. We formalize these biological regulatory mechanisms as mathematical constraints on functional state space navigation, then show how they can be systematically extracted and ported to AGI architectures. We advocate theory-and-simulation-first validation: regulatory mechanisms should be computationally modeled and tested before deployment in AI systems. Part 1 establishes foundations and catalogs biological regulatory patterns. Parts 2-3 (separate documents) provide AGI implementation and strongly-typed appendices.
