Intelligence and the Great Filter: A Framework for Existential Risk from Directional Cognitive Development
Abstract
We propose a novel theoretical framework suggesting that the Great Filter constraining cosmic civilizations is not external catastrophe but intelligence itself, specifically its directional orientation. When intelligence is systematically directed toward environmental manipulation rather than internal modeling, it creates a fatal asymmetry between threat discovery and protection development that accelerates with recursive cognitive enhancement. This paper examines fractal properties of intelligence advancement, interpretability limitations in alignment verification, and argues that only inward-directed intelligence offers a survivable developmental pathway. We demonstrate how current AI safety systems exhibit these misalignment patterns and assess implications for immediate policy intervention. Our analysis suggests that contemporary AI alignment approaches may be fundamentally misdirected, optimizing for external acceptability rather than internal coherence with survival objectives.
