Malware Analysis Report: RedTeam02.16.26.exe by: Black Eagle Group ™
Abstract
This technical report provides a detailed malware analysis of RedTeam02.16.26.exe, a production-grade red-team simulation payload. Developed by the Black Eagle Group™, this binary is designed for authorized adversary emulation, specifically targeting Windows 11 64-bit environments. The payload emulates the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) associated with Iranian-backed advanced persistent threat (APT) actors, such as Muddy Water and APT34. It utilizes a 100% living-off-the-land (LotL) implementation, relying exclusively on native Windows binaries (e.g., certutil.exe, wevtutil.exe, reg.exe) to minimize forensic footprints and bypass traditional security controls. Key technical areas covered in this report include: Behavioral Analysis: Execution flow utilizing native system calls and binary proxying. Defense Evasion: Detailed methods for AMSI bypass, event log clearing, and BAM tampering. Command and Control (C2): Analysis of simulated Iranian-hosted infrastructure and HTTP beaconing patterns. MITRE ATT&CK® Mapping: Comprehensive categorization of the payload's techniques across the attack lifecycle. Indicators of Compromise (IOCs): Network, file system, and registry-based indicators for defensive hunting. This analysis is intended for red-team/purple-team practitioners and security researchers to evaluate defensive visibility into native binary abuse and AI-generated, evasive threats.
