Abstract

A Conceptual Framework: "Six Research Orientations of University Faculty Research" This article introduces a conceptual framework called “Six Research Orientations of University Faculty Research.” It is derived from the author's reflective academic journey while delivering a keynote lecture at Dent UP Research Day, themed “Conducting Research as Easy as the Mind Allows.” The analysis indicates that university research does not originate from a single motivational source. Instead, it is shaped by at least six distinct orientations that influence the initiation and development of research pathways: Specialty-Driven Research Practice-Emergent Research Network-Driven Research Innovation-Led Research Policy-Responsive Research Mission-Anchored Research This framework is not intended to establish a hierarchy among the orientations. Rather, it aims to highlight the structural diversity of motivational drivers among university faculty and emphasizes that recognizing one’s dominant orientation is vital for sustainable academic growth. When institutions acknowledge and strategically cultivate environments that support these orientations in harmony, research development within universities can progress beyond mere publication outputs, fostering a collective intellectual ecosystem that enriches society with wisdom.
