Abstract
Abstract This study aims to describe the dynamics of smoking behavior in a second-semester cadet at the Maritime Polytechnic of X City who was subjected to a special training (tarbinsus) sanction for smoking violations in the barracks. The semi-military education system implemented demands high discipline through a tight schedule, strict supervision, and a mechanism for punishment and rewards for cadets. Although effective in establishing discipline, this pattern gives rise to boredom, physical exhaustion, and psychological stress, which some cadets express through smoking behavior. The study used a qualitative approach through observation, autoanamnesis interviews in four sessions, and alloanamnesis with classmates. The results show that the subjects' smoking behavior is influenced by cognitive, social, and environmental factors. Cognitively, subjects tend to smoke when feeling bored, tired, or mentally burdened, and view smoking as a means of calming. Socially, this habit is formed since adolescence due to the influence of peers and significant figures in the family environment, then reinforced by the smoking culture in the barracks environment. Environmental factors such as monotonous routines, limited rest time, and inconsistent enforcement of rules contribute to weakening self-control. Although subjects understand the health risks and disciplinary consequences, nicotine dependence and emotional compulsion make it difficult to stop smoking. Special education sanctions provide a temporary deterrent effect and encourage smoking reduction efforts, but they do not completely eliminate the habit. The recommended psychological intervention is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help restructure maladaptive thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and prevent relapse. It is hoped that subjects will be able to gradually reduce or even stop smoking. Keywords: Smoking Behavior, Maritime Cadets.
