Data Visualisation: Voltaire and the translation of his works into Russian
Abstract
This visualisation is based on the following consideration: What role did translations play in the reception of Voltaire's works in the 18th century? French remained the language widely used among the nobility throughout this period, as opposed to Russian. At the same time, we see an increasing number of translations being published in Russia. The starting point for the visualisation is a bibliography of translations of Voltaire's works into Russian, which includes both independent and dependent publications. The spatial-temporal representation is intended to be self-explanatory and shows when which works were published in which locations. Each publication is represented by its year of publication. A coloured background stands for independent publications (monographs), a transparent background for dependent publications (as part of journals). The position of each publication is determined by its place of publication, which is shown on the left-hand side. The individual pink sections mark the individual reigns of the tsars and tsarinas. Publications connected by lines represent new editions of the same work. Numbers summarising individual areas are distributed throughout the visualisation.
