Abstract

Humanity and Flourishing introduces the VIA virtue of Humanity within higher-education contexts. Humanity encompasses the interpersonal strengths of Love, Kindness, and Social Intelligence, which support connection, relational awareness, and constructive engagement in learning environments. Drawing on character strengths research and higher-education wellbeing literature, the session explores how humanity-related capacities influence belonging, help-seeking, peer interaction, and leadership presence. Particular attention is given to the concept of optimal use, highlighting how both underuse (relational withdrawal or disconnection) and overuse (boundary erosion or over-involvement) may undermine effectiveness in academic and leadership settings. The seminar offers conceptual clarity and structured reflection on how relational character capacities operate within learning communities, particularly during periods of academic pressure, transition, and uncertainty. Learning Outcomes By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Define humanity as a virtue within the VIA Character Strengths framework. Identify the three humanity strengths—Love, Kindness, and Social Intelligence—and summarise their key features. Describe how humanity strengths contribute to belonging, engagement, and relational climate in higher-education contexts. Distinguish between optimal use, underuse, and overuse of humanity strengths. Recognise examples of humanity strengths operating in academic and leadership environments.
