Geometric D'Alembert Theory for Hyperbolic Wave Dynamics on Lorentzian Manifolds
Abstract
This paper develops a comprehensive geometric D'Alembert theory for understanding hyperbolic wave dynamics on Lorentzian manifolds. We extend the classical D'Alembert principle from flat Minkowski spacetime to the curved spacetimes of general relativity, providing a rigorous mathematical framework for wave propagation in the presence of gravitational fields. The theory leverages the properties of the covariant D'Alembert operator, also known as the Laplace-Beltrami operator, to describe scalar, vector, and tensor wave equations in a coordinate-independent manner. We emphasize the crucial role of causal structure and global hyperbolicity in ensuring the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for these wave equations. The framework elucidates how spacetime curvature influences wave characteristics, leading to phenomena such as gravitational lensing, red/blueshift, and backscattering. Furthermore, we explore the implications of this geometric theory for various astrophysical and cosmological contexts, including black hole physics, cosmological perturbations, and the generation of gravitational waves. The study highlights the fundamental link between spacetime geometry and the behavior of hyperbolic waves, offering insights into the underlying physics of our universe.
