Abstract

The Soil, Vegetation, and Snow (SVS) land surface scheme is developed at the Meteorological Research Division (MRD) of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to be used in the context of land surface and streamflow prediction. SVS is implemented in the official physics package (so called RPNPhy), which is part of the ECCC Surface Prediction System (SPS), a driver for offline surface simulations. We encourage users to follow the guidelines provided with the README of the Git repository of SPS (ECCC-ASTD-MRD/sps at 6.3.0-a15) to install the SVS model. The RPNPhy package from the SPS git repository does not include the changes related to the enhanced frozen ground infiltration configuration and the updates from the soil freezing module presented in Appendix A of Amani et al. (2025) [https://doi.org/10.5194/hess-29-2445-2025]. Here, we uploaded the RPNPhy-MP package which includes those changes. Users must replace the routines of the RPNphy package with those within the RPNPhy-MP folder to perform simulations using a setup identical to that described in the manuscript A non-explicit representation of macropores in SVS improves streamflow simulations under frozen soil conditions, available as a preprint in the EGUsphere platform for a publication in the journal Hydrology and Earth Systems Science. The modifications were mostly made to the hydro_svs.F90, soil_freezing.F90 and the inisoili_svs.F90 routines but affect also several other routines of SVS. Therefore, we recommend the users to replace the RPNPhy folder entirely.
