The Scaling Problem Was Solved 2,500 Years Ago: A hybrid framework combining ancient Venturi wind systems and closed-loop water channels for zero-waste data center cooling
Abstract
The rapid expansion of AI compute infrastructure has created an unsustainable demand for cooling resources. Modern data centers consume millions of gallons of water daily through evaporative cooling while drawing massive energy for HVAC operations. This paper argues that the thermal management problem facing hyperscale computing was solved independently at least twice in antiquity—once through passive air circulation (Venturi wind systems, as demonstrated by Hawa Mahal and Persian badgirs) and once through closed-loop water channels (as used in ancient Assyrian architecture at Nineveh). Neither approach wastes water. We propose a hybrid framework combining both methods for retrofit applications in existing facilities and integrated design in new construction, offering a path to sustainable scaling without the resource costs currently constraining AI infrastructure growth. The solutions exist. They have always existed. The task is recognition and implementation.
