World Recognition to Maratha Military Landscapes: A Majestic Legacy of the Valiant Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Abstract
Abstract The research paper, "World Recognition to Maratha Military Landscapes: A Majestic Legacy of the Valiant Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj" explores the revolutionary strategic vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his transformation of the Deccan’s rugged topography into a sophisticated military machine. Moving beyond conventional historiography, this study examines the concept of "Maratha Military Landscapes"—a network of over 300 forts that integrated natural basalt cliffs, dense forests, and the Arabian Sea to create an impregnable defensive system. The paper investigates Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s philosophy that "the fort is the kingdom," detailing how his architectural innovations, such as the Gomukhi (cow-mouth) gates and lead-infused foundations, neutralized the numerical superiority of the Mughal and Adil Shahi forces. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to the tactical use of Ganimi Kava (Guerrilla Warfare), where the Sahyadri Mountain Range acted as a force multiplier, allowing a smaller, mobile army to dominate larger, conventional forces.Furthermore, the paper analyses the inclusion of 12 iconic forts—including Raigad, Shivneri, and Sindhudurg—in the UNESCO World Heritage nomination. It argues that these sites represent an "outstanding universal value" due to their unique Deccan military architecture and their role in the birth of Hindavi Swarajya. By synthesizing geographical analysis with military history, this paper underscores how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s mastery over land and sea established a blueprint for naval and mountain warfare that remains a subject of study for military strategists today.
