Literature Review: Detection and Evasion Analysis of Man-in-the-Middle Phishing Attacks Using Evilginx3
Abstract
This literature review examines the state of research on man-in-the-middle (MITM) phishing attacks, detection mechanisms, and evasion techniques relevant to modern phishing toolkits. The review synthesizes findings from authentication research, social engineering studies, phishing detection methodologies, and red team operations. Key themes include the evolution of multi-factor authentication bypass techniques, sophisticated MITM phishing frameworks, automated detection systems, and operational security considerations for red team engagements. The review identifies significant gaps in empirical research on contemporary phishing toolkits such as Evilginx3, highlighting the need for updated evaluation of detection effectiveness against modern evasion capabilities. Findings indicate that while various detection approaches exist including SSL certificate monitoring, email security gateways, and behavioral analytics, their deployment and effectiveness vary considerably. The review emphasizes the ongoing challenge defenders face in keeping pace with rapidly evolving phishing techniques and the critical importance of layered security approaches combining technical controls with user awareness training.
