Development of Translation Theory: From Antiquity to Contemporary Practices
Abstract
This paper thoroughly examines the historical evolution of translation theory from antiquity to the 20th century. It traces the development of translation from a practical tool used for religious, literary, and scholarly purposes to an autonomous academic discipline. Additionally, the study explores significant translation strategies and debates, including the differences between literal and sense-for-sense approaches and between alienation and naturalization, as well as domestication and foreignization. From a structuralist perspective, the paper addresses contemporary challenges in cross-cultural and digital contexts.
