MOLECULAR FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE AND MICROBIAL INTERACTIONS
Abstract
This volume presents a multidisciplinary exploration of fundamental biological processes that influence health, disease, and life at multiple levels of organization. The chapters collectively emphasize the importance of integrating molecular, microbial, and cellular perspectives to advance contemporary biomedical science. The opening chapter examines the biological mechanisms underlying cancer development, tracing the progression from cellular dysregulation to tumor formation. It provides a foundational framework for understanding how genetic, metabolic, and signaling alterations drive malignancy and shape disease outcomes. Focusing on infectious disease dynamics, the second and third chapters address microbial interactions within the human body. The investigation of co-infection and colonization of the urinary tract by Klebsiella pneumoniae in HIV-affected populations highlights pressing clinical challenges, while the chapter on the microbiota reveals the profound influence of microbial communities as an invisible ecosystem essential to human health. The final chapter extends the discussion to microbial bioenergetics, exploring light-induced ATP formation in the archaeon Halobacterium salinarum. By illuminating alternative energy-harvesting strategies in extremophiles, this contribution underscores the diversity of life and broadens our understanding of bioenergetic principles across biological systems.
