Abstract

The author conducted faunistic studies of large butterflies. Between 2012 and 2025, he spent 150 days in the field observing diurnal butterfly species in the Dunaszentgyörgyi-láperdő Nature Reserve, and confirmed the occurrence of nocturnal Macrolepidoptera species through 65 nighttime light traps and the use of sex pheromones and red wine bait. Over the 12 years, he identified 533 butterfly species in the protected area, 29 of which are protected in Hungary. The number of species confirms that biodiversity is still remarkably high in the 332-hectare protected area. The paper deals separately with those butterfly species that are of international importance, as well as those that have undergone striking population changes in Hungary in recent decades. It concludes that global warming and frequent droughts may have caused population declines in species that prefer cool, wet habitats, while at the same time significantly increasing the influx of thermophilic southern species into the Carpathian Basin. Finally, it makes recommendations for the legal protection of several endangered butterfly species and draws attention to the urgent need to protect wetlands.
