Abstract

Since 2006, the Institute of Fine Arts–NYU, joined in 2018 by the University degli Studi di Milano, has been conducting research in the principal urban sanctuary of Selinunte. Since 2011, investigations have focused on Temple R, where the 2023/2024 excavation campaigns concentrated on the north-eastern corner of the building (SAS T). This paper examines the pottery from SAS T, recovered from stratigraphic contexts dating to the period following the Carthaginian conquest of 409 BC. The research pursues two main objectives: on the one hand, it aims to propose an absolute chronology for the Hellenistic levelling layers brought to light within Temple R, taking into account data emerging from the preliminary analysis of the ceramic material recovered from other trenches conducted within the building; on the other hand, it contributes to a more precise understanding of the material culture of fourth-century BC Selinunte. The analysis of the amphorae from the deposits of SAS T allows for a more accurate reconstruction of consumption patterns and the dynamics of the city’s trade networks between the Carthaginian conquest of 409 BC and the period of most intensive Punic control over the city, beginning at the end of the fourth century BC.
