Abstract

Beauty is the perception of maximum compression. A haiku is beautiful because 17 syllables compress an entire world. E = mc² is beautiful because five characters compress the relationship between all mass and all energy. A weathered tea bowl is beautiful because its imperfections are what remain after time has stripped away everything inessential. This paper formalizes beauty through ACAT as the subjective experience of encountering a representation near the R(D) optimum: maximum scope at minimum size. The formalization unifies 2,500 years of aesthetic theory—from Aristotle's unity-in-variety through Kant's purposiveness-without-purpose to Japanese wabi-sabi—under a single equation. It explains why beauty feels effortless (optimal compression requires no further processing), why it is culturally variable yet structurally universal (the compression operation is universal; the distortion tolerance is cultural), why experts and novices disagree about beauty (they compress at different depths), and why beauty matters for the future of artificial intelligence (the optimal AI loss function is the beauty function).
