The Output Illusion: Why Most AI Users Misunderstand Deep Collaboration
Abstract
This article, part of the Deep Collaboration Methodology (DCM) research series, introduces the concept of the "Output Illusion"—a cognitive error where AI users equate sophisticated machine-generated output with their own personal understanding. The author, Fan Chen-Chieh (Ah-Guang), analyzes the psychological mechanisms that make this illusion compelling and establishes a measurable gap between "Tool Use" (output-oriented) and "Deep Collaboration" (process-oriented). The paper argues that the Output Illusion poses a systemic risk in high-stakes domains like AI governance and ethics, where performed competence may mask a lack of functional architecture. It advocates for a transparent, reflexive relationship with AI where the user’s reasoning remains the central subject of development.
