Estallidos Sociales. Filosofía Política de la Privación Material y Humana
Abstract
Abstract. This book introduces the Theory of Objective Material Deprivation (TOMD) as a contribution to the normative interpretation of civic rebellions. Through an analysis of major social uprisings in Chile 1905–2019, the work builds the argument that severe and objectively measurable material deprivation serves as a sufficient condition for the emergence of collective mobilization. This premise stands regardless of subjective perceptions, political awareness, or involvement of party leadership. Unlike theories that focus on relative deprivation, the framework advanced here centres on concrete material conditions as the primary catalyst for collective action. It also further assigns explicit obligations to the State, particularly in ensuring subsistence guarantees and promoting social justice, and maintains that when the State resorts to repression under conditions of objective deprivation, it amplifies the illegitimacy of the existing political order. This dynamic creates a feedback loop, where efforts to suppress civic unrest in fact deepen the crisis of legitimacy faced by the authorities. The book concludes that the civic rebellions analysed are not mere anomalies within the social fabric. Rather, they represent structurally predictable responses to policy decisions that erode the material foundations of everyday life. In this sense, collective action emerges as an inevitable consequence of policies that undermine essential conditions for subsistence and social justice.
