Ensemble-based-Extreme-Forecast-Diagnostics-for-Zonda-Wind-Prediction
Abstract
This release contains all scripts, figures, and analysis tools used in the study of Zonda wind events over Mendoza city, Argentina, focusing on EFI, SOT, and CPF-based forecast evaluation. The code allows reproduction of all figures presented in the associated manuscript and includes routines for computing all statistics plots from an event-based diagnostics. Zonda Wind Events Classification:Zonda dates correspond to an expert-based observational catalogue using surface observations and synoptic analysis from Mendoza Airport (32.83°S, 68.8°W, 704 m.a.s.l.). Events are categorized based on maximum wind speed and duration (75th percentile thresholds): - Long events: duration > 9 hours- Strong events: wind speed > 21 kt- Long-Strong events: both duration > 9 hours and wind speed > 21 kt A total of 137 Zonda events (or Zonda days) were identified, with 27 Long, 24 Strong, and 13 Long-Strong events. Non-Zonda days were randomly sampled, avoiding 3 days before and after any Zonda event to minimize atmospheric contamination. Data availability:Surface observations for Zonda events must be requested from Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN, Mendoza Airport station ID: 87418). EFI, SOT, and CPF gridded data were extracted from ECMWF MARS archives via a non-public request. Folder structure:- data/: CSV file containing total Zonda dates- scripts/: Python scripts for EFI/SOT/CPF analysis and plotting
