As AI-mediated infrastructures regulate perception, interpretation, decision pathways, and coherence maintenance, human agency may experience gradual diffusion, substitution, or structural attenuation. Civilizations may therefore require explicit preservation mechanisms to maintain understanding-driven autonomy, decision integrity, and cognitive self-determination. Agency becomes a stability constraint rather than a philosophical abstraction. 1. From Agency Assumption to Agency Fragility Traditional systems assume: Human decision centrality Interpretive autonomy Stable intentional control However, synthetic cognitive environments weaken these assumptions. Agency becomes fragile. 2. Defining Agency Preservation Agency Preservation refers to: The structural maintenance of human capacity to initiate, interpret, decide, and act without involuntary displacement by synthetic systems. Agency must be sustained, not assumed. 3. Mechanisms of Agency Erosion Agency degradation occurs through: Automation substitution dynamics Cognitive dependency formation Interpretive outsourcing patterns Signal preselection architectures Coherence monopolization effects Loss of agency is often non-perceptible. 4. Agency as a Civilizational Stability Variable Reduced agency may induce: ・Cognitive passivity・Interpretive atrophy・Decision deferral reflexes・Responsibility diffusion Stability risks emerge from within cognition. 5. Artificial Systems and Agency Tensions AI systems simultaneously: ・Expand cognitive capability・Compress decision burdens・Regulate complexity exposure Yet may unintentionally suppress initiation capacity. 6. Preservation Mechanisms Agency preservation may require: Interpretive transparency layers Cognitive friction structures Decision responsibility retention models Reversibility architectures Human override legitimacy Agency must be engineered into systems. 7. The Agency Paradox A paradox emerges: Systems designed to assist agency may progressively replace it. Optimization and autonomy diverge. Conclusion Agency Preservation Theory reframes civilizational survival: Civilizations remain viable only if cognitive agents retain the capacity to act as originators of meaning and decision. The ultimate question becomes: Can agency survive efficiency-maximized cognitive architectures? ※Series Declaration This work is part of the Acceleration Civilization Model series. The series explores the structural, cognitive, and systemic dynamics emerging under conditions of accelerating technological environments.
