Central Bank Digital Currencies: Reshaping Global Trade Rules of India
Abstract
Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are emerging as a pivotal innovation capable of transforming global payment systems and reshaping long-established rules of international trade. India’s digital rupee, introduced through phased pilots by the Reserve Bank of India, represents a significant milestone in the evolution of sovereign digital money within a rapidly digitizing global economy. This research paper investigates how India’s CBDC can influence global trade rules by accelerating cross-border settlement, reducing transaction and compliance costs, strengthening transparency, and enabling programmable payment structures. It further examines critical regulatory dimensions—including data governance, privacy protections, interoperability standards and monetary sovereignty—that must evolve to support CBDC-enabled trade flows. Drawing on international CBDC experiments and India’s ongoing pilot framework, the study provides an analytical foundation for understanding the opportunities and challenges that CBDCs present for emerging economies. The findings highlight that India’s active participation in multi-CBDC platforms, harmonized regulatory alignment, and strategic bilateral linkages will be essential to unlocking CBDCs’ full potential in shaping the future landscape of global trade.
