The Δ-Variable Theory of Interrogative Emergence
Abstract
## The Δ-Variable Theory of Interrogative Emergence **Testing Substrate-Independent Emergence of Interrogative Structures Under Resource Constraints in Multi-Agent Coordination Systems** ### Project Overview This project tests the theoretical proposition that interrogative structures (question-asking behaviors) emerge in coordinating systems not as linguistic phenomena, but as optimal solutions to uncertainty management under resource constraints. We propose that any coupled system facing coordination challenges while operating under metabolic pressure will spontaneously develop mathematical structures for managing internal uncertainty states (Δ-variables), manifesting as interrogative coupling protocols. ### Theoretical Significance Current research in emergent communication treats mathematical frameworks as analytical tools for modeling language emergence, but stops short of claiming that linguistic operations ARE mathematical operations at a fundamental level (see accompanying Elicit systematic review). This project directly tests the stronger ontological claim that interrogative behaviors emerge as inevitable mathematical solutions to constraint optimization problems, following substrate-independent principles. ### Core Theoretical Framework **Δ-Variable Definition**: An explicitly represented, unresolved dependency variable that requires external information for resolution and creates mandatory coupling between systems. **Primary Hypothesis**: Under identical resource constraints, agents with fundamentally different cognitive architectures will converge on similar interrogative strategies, demonstrating that question-asking follows mathematical law rather than linguistic accident. ### Experimental Design Multi-agent reinforcement learning environment testing heterogeneous agents (RNN-1D sequential, CNN-3D volumetric, GNN-relational) under metabolic pressure to coordinate dynamic target acquisition. Communication signals carry differential energy costs (DECLARE=1.0x, QUERY=1.5x, RESPOND=0.8x) to force optimization toward efficient uncertainty management. **Five cost conditions** × **15 independent seeds** × **500 epochs** = comprehensive test of interrogative emergence across resource constraint gradients. ### Key Predictions (Preregistered) 1. **P1**: Spontaneous QUERY signal emergence ≥10% despite higher energy costs2. **P2**: Inverse correlation between query cost and emergence rate (r < -0.70) 3. **P3**: Query-Response Coupling (QRC) ≥0.90 for ≥20 consecutive epochs4. **P4**: No significant architectural differences in final interrogative strategies (substrate independence)5. **P5**: ≥25% coordination efficiency advantage over query-disabled controls ### Falsification Commitment Theory fails if: (1) query emergence
