The Impact of Online Learning on Student Mental Health and Socialization in India
Abstract
Online learning has become a permanent feature of India’s education system, especially after its rapid expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. While digital education has helped maintain academic continuity and improve access to learning, it has also raised serious concerns regarding student mental health and socialization. This paper examines the impact of online learning on Indian students’ psychological well-being and social development. It discusses stress, anxiety, loneliness, digital fatigue, and reduced peer interaction, alongside potential benefits such as flexibility and accessibility. The paper argues that online learning in India has produced uneven outcomes shaped by socioeconomic inequality, digital infrastructure, and institutional preparedness. It concludes that without focused attention on mental health support and social engagement, the long-term reliance on online learning may negatively affect student development.
