Abstract

This study investigates the adoption and usage of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) among rural youth in India, situating it within the wider context of digital financial inclusion. With the rapid expansion of smartphones, internet connectivity, and government initiatives promoting cashless transactions, UPI has emerged as a transformative financial tool even in rural regions. The research analyses awareness levels, adoption patterns, and the purposes for which UPI is used—ranging from mobile recharges and shopping to money transfers and bill payments—while also examining trust and satisfaction associated with digital payment systems. Comparative data highlights that rural youth overwhelmingly rely on UPI as their primary mode of online banking, whereas urban users demonstrate more diversified behaviour by combining UPI with net banking. Despite high mobile penetration among younger cohorts, significant divides persist across gender, age, and rural–urban lines, with older populations and women reporting lower digital banking ability. The findings underscore UPI’s critical role in shaping financial behavior and promoting inclusion, while also pointing to the need for targeted digital literacy programs and infrastructure development to bridge gaps and ensure equitable participation in India’s digital economy.
